This week I was helping organize the digital photos, and select the best of them to be utilized in the new Panta Rei website which should be online some time soon. Above is a sneak preview. I also took some photos on the grounds to have updated images. The panoramic below shows the house to the right in which I live, and the main structures to the left in which I work. Questa settimana ho aiutato organizzare le foto digitali, e fare una selezione delle migliori per essere utilizzate nel nuovo sito internet di Panta Rei che dovrebbe essere pronto fra poco. For my last week at Panta Rei, I asked if I could sleep in the dormitory to experience what it is like to sleep in a building made with earth and straw. (The building where I had been sleeping has external cavity walls made of terra cotta blocks and cork insulation.) I chose a room that faces both north (highly insulated external wall made of straw bales and earth plaster) and south (massive internal wall of raw earth blocks that faces the greenhouse). The one thing I noticed was that the unheated dormitory was as warm as the little house that was being heated. Per la mia ultima settimana a Panta Rei, ho chiesto se potrei dormire nel dormitorio per provare com'è a dormire in un edificio fatto con la terra e paglia. (La casa dove dormivo ha muri perimetrali fatti con laterizi forati e sughero granulare.) Ho scelto una stanza che ha un muro a nord (con buon isolamento fatto con le balli di paglia e l'intonaco in terra) e un muro a sud (massivo, retrostante alla serra, fatto con i blocchi in terra cruda). Una cosa che ho notato era che il dormitorio con il riscaldamento ancora non accesso ha una temperatura simile a la casa che era riscaldata.

The chilly fall weather has arrived here. Hence the reeds that had been providing shade in the greenhouse corridors were removed to let the full sunlight in. The temperature inside the greenhouse was stunning, a true testiment to its effectiveness. The heating was still not turned on in the building, and yet it felt like it was thanks to the passive heating occuring in this zone, where sunlight pours in and whose heat is asborbed by the massive raw earth block wall and stone paving which is then released slowly later. Il tempo qui è diventato freddino. Le cane che hanno provvisto l'ombra per le serre erano tolte per permettere che più sole entra. La temperatura dentro della serra era incredibile, una vera testimonianza a la sua efficienza. This weekend I was in Casalincontrada, Abruzzo for a conference/festival regarding earth construction. The pictures were taken during a tour of local houses that had been built with cob (earth and straw loaves), some abandoned, others being restored. Click on the photo above to see the full album. A glimpse of what the earth and straw mixture looks like when the formwork is removed (on the interior side of the wall we just completed). Once the pallets were filled with earth and straw we created a thicker mixture of earth and water to which straw was mixed in by hand creating and used as the first layer of plaster. The surface to which the plaster was applied was first painted with a water and earth mixture. We had one piece of wood that was projecting out from the wall a bit, so we disguised it by creating a form of snake with the plaster. We were inspired by a real snake that we'd seen coming down from the roof of the wood workshop. Dopo che i pallet erano riempieti con la terra e paglia abbiamo creato una mescolanza piu densa di terra e acqua a cui abbiamo aggiunto la paglia a mano per fare l'impasto utlizzato per la prima strata di intonaco. La superficie a cui l'intonaco e' applicato era bagnato prima con una tintura di terra e acqua. Abbiamo avuto un pezzo di legno che usciva del muro un po', cosi l'abbiamo nascosto creando la forma di un serpente nell'intonaco. Eravamo inspirati da una serpente viva che abbiamo visto scendendo del tetto della falegnameria.

This week with three volunteers we worked on another wall of the wood workshop. This time we used a hybid technique, combinding the use of the pallets with formwork. First we made a liquidy mixture of earth and water. We tested its density by pouring 100mL to see if it created a circle around 20cm in diameter. Then we added straw by hand and let it sit for a minimum of six hours. We then painted the pallets with earth and water mixture before putting the bathed straw in between the pallets and the adjacent furniture, working in horizontal layers. Questa settimana con tre volontari abbiamo lavorato su un'altro muro della falegnameria. Questa volta abbiamo usato una tecnica ibrida combinando l'uso del pallet con quella della cassaforma. Prima abbiamo fatto un'impasto liquido con la terra e aqua nella molazza. Abbiamo fatto una prova della densita' versando 100mL su un vetro per vedere se faceva un circo con un diametro di circa 20cm. Dopo abbiamo aggiunto la paglia a mano e abbiamo lasciato questa miscela per un minimo di sei ore. Prima di metterela fra i pallet ed i mobili in strate orizzontali abbiamo bagnato i pallet con terra e acqua.

These photos show the painting of the western wall of the large gathering room to which I had repaired the cracks using the lime and ground brick mix. As is common, it is practically impossible to match the color of the wall exactly so it is necessary to paint on top to cover the multiple repairs made. Originally we were going to repaint the whole wall with earth paint, though we decided to limit our painting to keep as much of the existing wall with its lovely rosy ground brick color. I came up with a scheme which involved painting around the windows and doors in a earth and ground brick mix, and then between painting a mountain profile with earth paint. Queste foto mostrano la tinteggiatura del muro ovest della sala grande a qui ho riparato le crepi con l'impasto di calce e cocciopesto. Come di solito, e' quasi impossible a ricreare lo stesso colore del muro esistente, e' necessario a tinteggiare sopra le riparazioni. Prima abbiamo pensato di tinteggiare tutto il muro con la terra, pero' dopo abbiamo deciso di solo tinteggiare dove ho riparato, per conservare il piu' possibile del colore esistente. Ho deciso di tinteggiare intorno alle finistre e la porta con una tinta di terra e cocciopesto, e dopo ho tinto con la terra solo un profilo delle montagne fra gli altri.

Here's one repair made using the mixture made of lime and ground brick. The process is similar to that used when repairing cracks in the earth plaster, though because lime is in the mix I wear gloves for protection. This particular wall with earth and lime plaster was flaking so I am in the process of cleaning/scrapping it dry with a sponge trowel. The bottom right hand corner is finished, and the portion above is yet to be done. These pictures show the before, after, and tools used to clean an exterior wall of earth and lime plaster that had been stained with dirt from subsquent construction activity. To clean in I simply brushed over with water colored with a little bit of earth and lime plaster. Cracks normally form as the initial coat of plaster dries, which helps the subsquent layer to be applied have something to grab onto. In the case of the current work, the day after it was applied and still moist we pressed closed the cracks to minimize their presence to decrease the number of subsequent layers to be applied (possibily leaving it as is). Le crepi normalmente si formano quando l'intonaco asciuga, e aiutano la strata seguente attaccare meglio. As soon as I returned I joined in with the work camp volunteers in the newest project at Panta Rei: creating walls to transform the current wood workshop into eventual classrooms. The method of construction is creating a wooden framework with pallets and scraps and then infilling with hay, and finally applying an earth and straw plaster. These photos show the mixing and application of the plaster. While I was on vacation much work occurred at Panta Rei with work camp volunteers, one of which the application of a final coat of earth and lime plaster on the north facing hay bale wall where I had previous filled and fixed holes and soft spots. There was a group of recent high school graduates that were at Panta Rei for a few days and one of the activities we involved them in was the application of the finish coat of external earth plaster on the west side of the stair connector building which was constructed last year. It was great to watch them really get into working with the earth plaster and exploring use of their hands versus tools. C'erano alcuni ragazzi a Panta Rei per qualche giorno e ci hanno aiutato ad applicare l'ultima strata d'intonaco di terra all'esterno del corpo di collegamento che era costruito l'anno scorso. The third week of July in Passignano sul Trasimeno is filled with special events for local celebrations and festivities. I walked down to town to see the "burning of the castle" one night, which included a lovely display of fireworks. After repairing the original holes that were in the exterior wall made of hay bails and earth plaster, I had to make sure that the part that had been damaged most was solid enough to apply the future layer of plaster. I discovered that the wall had more soft spots that visible on the surface. I ended up creating more holes that need to be filled and repaired when I got rid of the loose plaster. Dopo di aver riparato i bucchi originali nel muro di balle di paglia con intonaco di terra cruda, ho avuto sapere che la parte piu' danneggiata era sufficientemente solida per applicare la prossima strata d'intonaco. I learnt that a damp cloth can go a long way in repairs. First, I was having problems with this corner because two different kinds of plaster meet, and the one which included brick dust was especially dry and powdery on the surface, meaning that it was hard to get my new earth plaster to stick to it. After dampening well the area I was trying to apply to (to eliminate the extra powder), I was then able to work the earth plaster that I had previousy applied to fill the new cracks and stick better...all using the damp cloth. Ho imparato che un panno bagnato puo' essere molto utile per fare le riparazioni. Prima ho avuto problemi con questo angolo perche' due tipi diversi di intonaco si incontrano, e uno e' fatto con coccio pesto e era particolarmente polveroso sulla superficie, significando che il nuovo intonaco no si attacava bene. Dopo di bagnare bene la superficie per eliminare il polvere ho potuto anche rilavorare il materiale che avevo applicato prima per riempire le crepe nuove e si e' attacato molto meglio...e tutto questo ho fatto solo con un panno poco bagnato.

I was able to join the group of kids who are at Panta Rei this week for their day trip to Perugia. We took the train from Passignano to Perugia, and from the train stain there is the "MiniMetro" that brings you up the hill to the center of the historic part of town. I look forward to returning again and exploring the city more. Ho potuto andare con il gruppo di ragazzi che sono a Panta Rei questa settimana per la loro gita a Perugia. Siamo andati in treno da Passignano a Perugia e dopo della stazione abbiamo preso il MiniMetro per arrivare al centro storico che e' sulla collina. Non vedo l'ora di ritornare ed esplorare di piu' la citta'.

This is the stairway that connects the two main buildings (the structure that houses the classrooms and offices + the dormitory building). It was built last summer and the walls are made of staw and clay. I was touching up all the tiny cracks in the internal earth plaster; later this summer we'll be giving the entire wall a final coat. Questo è il corpo che collega le due strutture principali (quella delle aule e degli uffici e l'altra che sia il dormitorio). Era costruito l'estate scorso e i muri erano fatti con paglia e terra cruda. I was working on the ladder today to reach the cracks above the doors and windows. For the larger cracks I often have to go back and rework them two to three times as the reopen, but usually as smaller cracks. Oggi stavo lavorando sulla scala per arrivare alle crepi in alto sopra le porte e le finestre. These past days I have been cleaning up the building plans in AutoCAD to then use them as a legend in which the various materials and methods used to construct the buildings at Panta Rei will be identified. Here is the sketch I was using today as I took notes while surveying the buildings, color coded to identify the various wall types. I also noted all cracks and holes that exist internally so that I can systematically tackle their repairs. These are the two main buildings where groups are hosted and office and classrooms exist. The house I live in is a third structure on site. In questi giorni sto puliendo le piante in AutoCAD, per usarle come una legenda in cui identificero' i vari materiali e metodi utlizzati per costruire gli edifici a Panta Rei. Qui c'e' lo schizzo che ho usato oggi per fare appunti mentre che facevo il rilievo, i vari colori representano le vari tipi di muri che esistono. Ho anche notato tutti i crepi e bucchi che ci sono all'interno, cosi' posso continuare a riparareli in un modo sistematico. Questi sono i due edifici principali dove i gruppi sono ospitati e ci sono gli uffici e le aule. La casa dove abito e' una terza struttura sul sito.

This past weekend while I was in Florence I discovered that my engagement ring and wedding band were missing from my hand. I was in shock and distraught, and looked in every possible place. Thinking it possible that they may have slipped off when I was mixing the slip by hand, I began systematically sifting through the large container of slip, and in the process took out all gravel and stones that shouldn't be in it. After 8 hours of sifting, I greatfully came upon the rings. Lesson learned: do not wear any rings while working with mud!
Questo weekend mentre che ero a Firenze ho scoperto che avevo perso la mia fede. Ero molto triste e ho provato a trovarla in ogni posto che pensavo sia possibile. Pensando che fosse possibile che la avevo persa nella barbottina che avevo fatto l'altro giorno ho cominciato a cercare. Mentre che la cercavo anche ho tolto la ghiaia che non dovrebbe essere. Dopo 8 ore la ho trovata! Ho imparato di non indossare gli anelli mentre che lavoro con la terra cruda.

Here's my set-up for now, and the task for the first week, is to go through various documents, drawings and photos of the history and construction of Panta Rei so that I can then propose and discuss what I want to focus on during my time here. Half my time will be spent helping to organize and create something useful with these documents, for example a small publication. The other half of my time will be spent doing hands on work, mainly with earth stucco.

Eccoci...dove lavoro per adesso e il mio mestiere della prima settimana, vedere tutti questi vari documenti, disegni, e foto sulla storia e la costruzione di Panta Rei. Dopo devo proporre e discutire su che cosa vorrei infocare mentre che sono qui. Metà del mio tempo sarà utilizzato per organizzare e creare qualcosa utile con questi documenti, per espempio una piccola pubblicazione. L'altra metà del mio tempo sarà utilizzato per fare lavoro con le mie mani, principalmente con intonaco in base argilla.

I arrived this afternoon at Panta Rei, in Passignano sul Trasimeno, Umbria where I will be this summer to complete an internship for the Master's program in Sustainable Architecture that I am enrolled in this year. Sono arrivata questo pomeriggio a Panta Rei, a Passignano sul Trasimeno, in Umbria dove sarò quest'estate per fare lo stage che è parte del Master in Architettura Sostenibile che faccio quest'anno. This is the building in which there are offices, meeting room, and kitchen. There are half a dozen or so regular staff here each day, and four of us who reside here too. Questo è el edificio dove ci sono gli uffici, la sala di reunione, e la cucina. Ci sono più o meno 5 impiegati che sono qui ogni giorno, e 4 altri che anche abitiamo qui.
